What is Instagram Engagement Rate?

Engagement rate is the percentage of your followers who actively interact with your content through likes, comments, and saves. It is one of the most important metrics for understanding how well your content resonates with your audience.

A high follower count means nothing if nobody is engaging. Brands and agencies look at engagement rate first when deciding which creators to work with.

How is Engagement Rate Calculated?

We use the most widely accepted formula:

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Followers × 100

For example, if you have 10,000 followers and your last 12 posts averaged 350 likes and 40 comments:

(350 + 40) ÷ 10,000 × 100 = 3.9%

What is a Good Instagram Engagement Rate?

  • 🔴
Under 1% Low. Content is not resonating or audience may include fake followers.
  • 🟡
1% to 3.5% Average. Typical for accounts with 10K to 100K followers.
  • 🟢
3.5% to 6% Good. Strong content and an engaged niche audience.
  • 💚
Above 6% Excellent. Top tier creators with highly loyal communities.

Note: engagement rate naturally decreases as follower count grows. A creator with 1M followers will almost always have a lower rate than one with 10K followers.

Why Does Engagement Rate Matter?

  • Brands pay more for creators with high engagement — not just high follower counts.
  • Instagram's algorithm rewards high engagement by pushing your content to more non-followers.
  • A low engagement rate is an early warning sign that your content strategy needs fixing.
  • Engagement rate is the fastest way to spot fake followers — bought followers never engage.
